SafeFamily Guide: Smartphone Parental Controls
This guide covers parental controls for iPhone and Android phones/tablets. Platform controls add an additional layer on top of SafeFamily's network-level DNS filtering.
Overview
iPhone: Apple Screen Time provides app limits, content restrictions, and communication controls. Android: Google Family Link offers similar controls for phones and tablets.
Important: SafeFamily DNS filtering protects at the network level when devices use your home WiFi. Platform controls apply on the device itself-including when using mobile data-adding an essential second layer.

Common Bypass Risks and How SafeFamily Helps
| Risk | Platform Control | SafeFamily DNS |
|---|---|---|
| New browser/app bypasses filters | Block new apps, use allowed-sites-only | DNS blocks inappropriate domains on WiFi |
| Screen time bypass (settings reset) | Use Screen Time passcode, Family Link locks | N/A |
| Mobile data bypasses DNS | Platform controls apply on-device | When on home WiFi, DNS adds network layer |
| Incognito/private browsing | Safari: Block in restrictions; Chrome: Filter still applies | DNS filters all traffic |
Quick Reference
| Platform | Main Tool | App Limits | Web Filter | Screen Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Screen Time | Yes, by category | Safari restrictions | Downtime + limits |
